Review: First Books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – edited by Stephan Arthur of The Poor Folk Upon the Moors
This booklet, which is a limited edition priced at £6 (includes postage), looks at the young Arthur’s early attempts at writing
beginning with a scrap from a story written about a Tiger when he was at
school.
The early pages of the book take the form of a concise biography which sets the scene for the written efforts that occupy the rest of the volume. These cover both fiction and non-fiction and show how Doyle’s writing style developed across various topics.
It is a fascinating insight into the development of his writing and the pieces are in themselves very interesting and show something of his interests and character.
