I have, however, ...I have never seen a frame of it. I have, however, obtained a copy of the first series and-when time allows-intend to watch it. So far, Jeremy Brett remains THE Holmes for me. I did enjoy The League of Gentlemen enormously; the Christmas episode with the Vet proved Mr. Gatiss can write and produce wonderful programmes-I hope the first series will prove as watchable... If artistry, they've failed, because as you said, "Its sum is much less than the total of its parts.". If money, they may have scored bigger had they, in fact, given the fans something to cherish.

"One of things I take away from this failure is--for two self-professed fanboys, how much Moffat and Gatiss don't understand about Sherlock Holmes."

Agreed. Someone on tumblr just said, "This is the character arc they wanted for their Sherlock! This is what they mean by paying tribute to their favourite character as fanboys! For shame!!!"

I can't really believe that their twelve year old selves got excited about Mary Morstan ninja-assassin and Euros Holmes, the secret sister. These must have sprung from their disconnect with female fans and not understanding that better female characters does not mean hot and deadly. Its sum is much less than the total of its parts. Many of the points you make can, and will no doubt in the future, be turned into full-length dissertations on what can and did go wrong with the show. One of things I take away from this failure is--for two self-professed fanboys, how much Moffat and Gatiss don't understand about Sherlock Holmes. James C.
