So we have a new villain - CAM Devil

As widely reported, we have our new BBC Sherlock villain - Charles Augustus Magnussen.

Now he is clearly, at least by the name, based on Charles Augustus Milverton the blackmailer but beyond the name how similar is he likely to be? He will certainly have his work cut out to give us a better (or more vile) CAM Devil than Robert Hardy in Granada's excellent The Master Blackmailer.

At least the commentators were right. As soon as Moriarty decided to formally introduce his brain to a bullet the talk commenced on which canonical nemesis would be dusted down for Sherlock to face next. The immediate two front runners where Milverton (now Magnussen) and Baron Gruner from The Illustrious Client

From the canon, post Moriarty, these are probably the two most famous male villains but what about the ladies? I would very much like to see Isadora Klein from The Three Gables make an appearance. Perhaps they'll save her up for series four.

  1. I am so excited for this, excited beyond anything coherent. Granada's Master Blackmailer was the very first adaptation of Sherlock Holmes I ever saw, and Milverton has always been the villain I've found most disturbing. From the picture of Lars Mikkelsen, this series looks like it's going to be grand.
